What.
Album redesign for Steve Lacys Demo album.
DESIGN THINKING.
The album gatefold tells the familiar story of two people falling in love. The outside cover shows the characters meeting for the first time, appearing as two separate individuals in a crowd. The inner gatefold captures the "talking stage," where the characters remain apart but begin to form a deep connection. The back cover concludes the narrative with the characters in an embrace, symbolising their bond. This connection is further emphasised by the warm orange hue, symbolising the merging of the yellow and red characters coming together.
This narrative aligns with Steve Lacy's album, which explores the simple yet powerful themes of love, vulnerability, and self-discovery. The characters are illustrated within a confined shape, reflecting Lacy's exploration of inner doubts and insecurities, and the process of breaking free from them when love is found. Using an abstract, geometric style, the story is depicted in a dynamic, visually engaging way—mirroring the bold and energetic nature of the album's music. The minimalist shapes also echo the straightforward, unembellished lyrics and themes that permeate the album.
